The day the world turned
Every Sunday is an anniversary. Very early on the first day of the week, some women walked to a tomb expecting a body and found the stone rolled away. Everything Christians believe hangs on that morning, and we get to remember it fifty-two times a year.
Most of us do not wake up on Sunday thinking about that. We wake up thinking about getting the kids dressed, or whether we can skip church this once, or what is on our phone. A Sunday morning prayer is a way of lifting your eyes before the day gets hold of you.
Worship, rest, and the week ahead

Sunday is when the phone should be furthest away

Risen Lord, on the first day of the week the women came to the tomb and found it empty, and nothing has been the same since. That is what today is. Not just a day off, not just church. The anniversary of the morning death lost. I confess I do not always wake up with that in mind. I wake up thinking about lunch, or the week, or the phone. Lift my eyes. Let me see this Sunday for what it is. I am going to worship with Your people today. Some of them I love easily and some of them I do not. Give me grace for all of them. Let me come not as a critic of the sermon or the music but as a hungry person coming to a table. Then let me rest. You commanded it, and I am strangely bad at obeying this one. Help me put the work down, put the phone down, and simply be with the people You have given me. And as the day ends, hand me the week gently. Let me start it tomorrow not with dread but with the quiet confidence of someone who has spent a day with God. Christ is risen. Let me live like it.Amen.

How to pray a sunday morning prayer

Pray before the phone, before church. Sunday morning is often the most distracted hour of the week: getting everyone ready, running late, checking messages in the car. Take one quiet minute before any of it.
