Evening prayer

An evening prayer closes the working day with God before the night takes over: thank Him for what was good, confess what was not, and hand Him what is still unfinished. The short prayer below is enough. Say it when you put the work down, not only when you turn out the light.

Evening is a door, not leftover time

Most days do not end. They leak. You leave work in the car, in the kitchen, in the way you answer the first person who talks to you. Evening prayer is how you shut the door on purpose.

The Church has always treated dusk as its own hour. Psalm 141 calls it the evening sacrifice. The disciples on the road asked Jesus to stay because it was nearly evening. You do not have to be a monk to need that. You just have to be someone who brings the office home in their shoulders.

The prayers on this page are for that hinge: after the work, before the bed. Thank Him. Confess. Hand over the unfinished. Then be a person in your own house.

Look at the day with Him, not at the argument

An evening examen is older than any productivity app. One gratitude. One sorry. One name. That is enough to keep a day from becoming a story you chew all night.

You are not writing a report for God. He was there. You are agreeing to see it with Him instead of with your pride or your shame.

If you are still angry, say that. Paul said not to let the sun go down on it. An evening prayer is a good place to put the anger down before it gets in bed with you.

Close the apps before you close the day

The evening feed is how a finished day becomes an unfinished brain. You meant to be done. Forty minutes later you are more awake, more compared, and further from anyone in the room.

Pray when you shut the laptop. Then put the phone face down. If that is a joke in your house, PrayerMax can make the evening prayer the thing you do before Instagram opens. The day deserves a better last hour than a stranger’s highlight reel.

2. Short prayer

Evening prayer after a hard day

Father, I am coming in tired and a little raw. I do not have a beautiful prayer. I have this day, and I am handing it to You. Wash the sharp edges. Keep me from taking it out on the people at home. Sit with me in this evening. That is enough.Amen.

3. Longer prayer

A longer evening prayer

God of the evening, You made the dusk as well as the morning, and You call both of them good. As the light goes I want to look at this day with You, not with the version of it I am still arguing with. Thank You for the small mercies I hurried past. I am sorry for the moments I was impatient, distracted, or unkind. Wash them. I do not want them at the table tonight. There are things still open: work I did not finish, a conversation I am dreading, someone I cannot fix. I cannot solve them from this chair. So I am placing them in Your hands until morning. Give this house a peaceful evening. Let the people in it find me present, not still at the office in my head. And when it is time to sleep, let me actually sleep. Into Your hands I commit this day.Amen.

4. For your family

Evening prayer for my family

Lord, we are all coming back in from our separate days. Help us be kind in the kitchen. Help us listen. Bless this evening. Protect this home. Draw us toward each other and toward You.Amen.

5. For someone else

Evening prayer for someone I love

Father, as this day closes I am thinking of them. Be near them in their evening. Give them rest if they are tired, company if they are alone, and the sense that they are not carrying it by themselves.Amen.

6. From Scripture

Evening prayer from the Psalms

Let my prayer be set before You like incense, the lifting of my hands like the evening sacrifice. I lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. The Lord will watch over my coming and going, both now and forevermore.Amen.

7. Longer prayer

An evening examen

Lord, walk through this day with me. Where did I notice You? Where did I miss You? What am I grateful for? What am I sorry for? Who needs my prayer tonight? I give You all of it. Stay with me through the evening.Amen.

8. Traditional

A traditional evening collect

Lighten our darkness, we beseech Thee, O Lord; and by Thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of Thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.Amen.

How to pray a evening prayer

  1. Pray when the work stops, not only at bedtime. Evening prayer is the hinge between the job and the house. If you wait until the pillow, the day has already spilled on everyone.

  2. Do a one-minute examen. One gratitude, one confession, one person to pray for. That is a complete evening prayer.

  3. Hand over the unfinished list. Say the open loops out loud, then say you are leaving them with Him until morning. Naming them is most of the rest.

  4. Do not take the day out on the house. Ask for a gentle evening before you walk in the door. God answers that one more often than people expect.

  5. Park the phone. The evening scroll steals the hour you meant to be a person. Pray first. Or let PrayerMax put the evening prayer in front of the apps.

Questions people ask

What is a good evening prayer?

“Lord, the work of this day is done. Thank You for what was good. Forgive what I got wrong. Hold what I could not finish. Give me a gentle evening. Amen.” That closes a day without pretending it was perfect.

What is the difference between evening prayer and night prayer?

Evening prayer is for dusk and the hours after work — closing the day while you are still up. Night prayer and a bedtime prayer are for the last minutes before sleep. Same God. Different hinge.

What Psalm is for evening prayer?

Psalm 141 (“let my prayer be set before you like incense… the evening sacrifice”), Psalm 4, Psalm 121, and the road-to-Emmaus line in Luke 24:29: “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening.”

How long should an evening prayer be?

One to three minutes. The examen above is enough. If you have more, let it grow. If you have nothing, the short prayer is still a real evening prayer.

When should I pray in the evening?

When you put the work down: the car in the driveway, the laptop shut, the kitchen light on. That is the moment the day either gets handed to God or dumped on whoever is home.
