Short prayer
A short bedtime prayer
Lord, thank You for today. Forgive what I got wrong. Guard this home and quiet my mind. I trust You with tomorrow.Amen.
The last words in your head matter
A bedtime prayer is not extra religion at the end of a long day. It is who gets the last word.
For most people the last word is a stranger on a screen. Then the mind keeps working in the dark, chewing other people’s lives and tomorrow’s list. Psalm 4 is the opposite ending: in peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
You do not need a long prayer before bed. You need an honest one, with the phone where you cannot reach it. Thank Him. Confess. Hand over the house. Sleep.
Prayer before bed is older than your mattress
Jews and Christians have put words between the day and the dark for a very long time. Compline — “into Your hands I commit my spirit” — has been said at bedsides for fifteen hundred years. Parents have taught children a four-line prayer for just as long, because children understand something adults forget: you do not lie down alone if God is God.
If your bedtime prayer has gone stale, you are probably missing one movement. Thanksgiving. Confession. Surrender. Protection. You do not need all four every night. You need the one you have been skipping.
Do not take the feed to bed
If you are reading this under a blanket, you already know. The device that brought you the prayer will happily steal the next hour.
Willpower at 11pm is a weak plan. Move the charger. Make the last act a prayer, not a scroll. PrayerMax exists for the nights when you will not do that on your own: the apps stay locked until you have prayed. Then sleep. Not pray, then scroll, then sleep.

2. Night
Prayer before bed when my mind will not stop
Father, I am in bed and I am still working. Take the night shift. Hold every worry until morning. You do not sleep, so I do not need to keep watch. Let me lie down in peace, because You alone keep me safe.Amen.
3. Longer prayer
A longer bedtime prayer
God, I am putting the day down now. Thank You for what was good in it, including the things I forgot to notice. I am sorry for the ways I lived as if I were on my own. Wash them. I do not want them in this bed. I am still holding people and problems I cannot fix from a pillow. I am giving them to You until morning. Wake me if I need to, but do not let me rehearse them all night. Cover this house. Watch over every person sleeping here and the ones who are far away. Give us real rest, not just hours. Into Your hands I commit my spirit.Amen.
4. For children
A child's bedtime prayer
Dear God, thank You for today. Thank You for my family and my home. Please watch over me while I sleep, and help me be kind tomorrow. I love You.Amen.
5. For your family
Bedtime prayer for my family
Lord, everyone under this roof is Yours. Give the children sound sleep. Give the tired ones rest. Keep us through the night and wake us to Your mercy in the morning.Amen.
6. For someone else
Bedtime prayer for someone I love
Father, as I lie down I am praying for them. Be near their bed. Carry what they are carrying. Let them sleep, and let them wake with hope.Amen.
7. From Scripture
Bedtime prayer from the Psalms
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. You who watch over me will not slumber. I will both lie down and sleep in peace.Amen.
8. Traditional
Compline at the bedside
Visit this place, O Lord, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy. Let Your holy angels dwell with us to preserve us in peace, and let Your blessing be upon us always. Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.Amen.

How to pray a bedtime prayer
-
Phone out of the bed. Across the room, or in another room. A bedtime prayer cannot compete with a glowing screen six inches from your face.
-
Keep it short on purpose. You are trying to sleep. Four honest lines beat a speech you will rush.
-
Name one thanks and one sorry. Then hand Him tomorrow. That is a complete prayer before bed.
-
End on Scripture, not a feed. Psalm 4:8 is built for the last minute of the day. Let it be the last sentence in your head.
-
If you cannot sleep, do not open the phone. Pray the insomnia prayer on our prayer for sleep page, or read Psalm 4 again. The scroll will not help.
Questions people ask
What is a good bedtime prayer?
“Lord, thank You for today. Forgive what I got wrong. Guard this home and quiet my mind. I trust You with tomorrow. Amen.” That is a complete prayer before bed. God is not grading the wording.
What is a good prayer to say before bed?
The same one. A prayer before bed and a bedtime prayer are the same act: you hand the day back before you sleep. Use the short prayer at the top, or Psalm 4:8 if you want Scripture instead of your own words.
What is a bedtime prayer for a child?
“Dear God, thank You for today. Thank You for my family and my home. Please watch over me while I sleep, and help me be kind tomorrow. Amen.” Short enough to remember. Honest enough to mean.
What Psalm should I read before bed?
Psalm 4, Psalm 91, Psalm 121 and Psalm 23. Read one slowly, out loud if you can. They were written for people who had to sleep in a world that was not safe, which is still most of us.
How do I stop scrolling in bed and pray instead?
Do not leave willpower in charge at 11pm. Charge the phone outside the bedroom. Or use PrayerMax so Instagram and TikTok stay locked until you have prayed. Put the bedtime prayer physically between you and the feed.
