Short prayer
A prayer in the moment of temptation
Lord, I am being pulled and part of me wants to go. You know exactly how this feels; You were tempted too, and You did not fall. Give me what You had. Show me the way out You promised, and give me the legs to take it. I choose You. Right now, in this moment, I choose You.Amen.
Jesus knows the pull from the inside
The most comforting verse about temptation is not a promise that it will stop. It is Hebrews 4:15: we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he did not sin.
Every way. Jesus knows what it is to be tired and offered an easy way out. To be hungry and offered bread on the wrong terms. To be alone at night and pulled toward something He should not touch. He felt the pull. He did not pretend it was not strong. And He did not fall.
So when you pray in temptation, you are not praying to a God who is disappointed that you are struggling. You are praying to a God who remembers what it is like, and who came through it so that He could help you come through it too. Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.
Watch and pray: the order matters
Jesus told the disciples in Gethsemane to watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. Not “pray when you fall.” Pray before, so that you do not.
This is why the morning prayer on this page may be the most important one. You know roughly where today’s temptations are. The hour you get tired. The site you drift toward. The person who provokes you. The bed with the phone in it. Pray about those specific places before you get there, and ask God to put a way out at each one before you arrive. Half the battle is fought before breakfast.
The way out is real, and it is usually a door
He will provide a way out. People read 1 Corinthians 10:13 as a promise that the temptation will fade if they hold still. It rarely does. The way out is an exit, and you have to walk through it.
In practice: put the phone down. Leave the room. Go outside. Call someone. Open your Bible to the verse you have hidden in your heart. Jesus answered every temptation in the desert with Scripture He already knew, which means He had memorised it before He needed it. Psalm 119:11 is the training plan: I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin.
Pray the short prayer. Then take the door.
Change the fight, not just the effort
If you keep losing the same temptation at the same hour in the same place, more effort is not the answer. Structure is.
Look at the pattern honestly. Tired, alone, late, with a screen? That describes most repeated temptations now. Move the phone out of the bedroom. Put a barrier on the apps that lead where you do not want to go. PrayerMax locks them and opens them only after you have prayed; it turns the reflex that starts the fall into the prayer that stops it. Tell one person. Change the route. Go to bed earlier.
Scripture is not embarrassed by this. Make no provision for the flesh (Romans 13:14) is a command to arrange your life so that sin is harder to reach. Faith and a locked door are teammates.
When you fall
You will sometimes. Everyone who is honest does. The temptation is not the sin, and the fall is not the end; the hiding afterwards is what does the damage.
Pray immediately, while it is still fresh. Do not wait until you feel worthy; that is shame talking, and shame is on the enemy’s side. Confess plainly, receive forgiveness plainly, and then ask the useful question: where was the way out, and why did I not take it? You will see it more clearly next time.
Then get up. The crown of life in James 1:12 goes to the one who perseveres, which is a word for people who fell and kept going.

2. Morning
Morning prayer against temptation
Father, I know roughly where today's temptations will be. So do You. Go there ahead of me. Put a way out at every one of them before I arrive. Make me alert when I am tired, honest when a lie would be easier, and strong when I am alone. Lead me not into temptation, and deliver me from evil. Keep me today. Tomorrow I will ask again.Amen.
3. Longer prayer
Prayer for a recurring temptation
God, it is the same one again. The same weak spot, the same time of day, the same excuse forming in my mind before I have even done anything. I know this road, and I know where it ends, and part of me is still walking down it. I am tired of losing the same fight. So I am asking You to change the fight. Show me what this temptation is really offering me: what emptiness it is promising to fill. Then fill it Yourself, so the offer loses its power. Show me the pattern: the tiredness, the loneliness, the phone, the place, the hour. Help me change what I can change so that I am not standing at the same door every night. And where I cannot change it, stand at the door with me. You were tempted in every way I am, and You did not sin. You know the pull from the inside. Be my strength where mine has run out, and let this be the season I look back on as the one where it finally broke.Amen.
4. Short prayer
Prayer after giving in to temptation
Father, I gave in. I knew, and I did it anyway. I am not going to hide. I am coming straight to You while it is still fresh. Forgive me. Clean me. Do not let the shame settle in and keep me away. Show me where the way out was, so I see it next time. I am getting up. I am still Yours.Amen.
5. Short prayer
Prayer for strength to resist
Lord, I do not have the strength for this, and I am done pretending I do. Your grace is sufficient. Your power is made perfect in weakness. Well, here is my weakness. Be strong in me. Stand where I cannot stand. Let me walk away from this today with Your strength and none of my own.Amen.
6. For someone else
Prayer for someone facing temptation
Lord, You know who I am praying for and what is pulling at them. Be nearer to them than the temptation is. Show them the way out. Give them the courage to take it. Send someone to stand with them at the hard hour. And if they fall, catch them fast, and bring them back to You before shame can.Amen.
7. Traditional
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.Amen.
8. From Scripture
Prayer for temptation from Scripture
No temptation has overtaken me except what is common to us all. God is faithful; He will not let me be tempted beyond what I can bear, but with the temptation He will provide a way out. Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Because Jesus Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.Amen.
Scripture to pray with

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Matthew 26:41
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence.”
Hebrews 4:15-16
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Psalm 119:11
How to pray a prayer for temptation
-
Pray before you are tempted. Jesus said “watch and pray so that you will not fall”; the praying comes first. A morning prayer that names where today's temptations will be is worth ten desperate ones in the moment.
-
In the moment, pray short and move. “Lord, show me the way out.” Then take it: put the phone down, leave the room, call someone. 1 Corinthians 10:13 promises an exit, not a force field.
-
Use Jesus' own prayer. He taught us to pray “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” When you have no words, you have these.
-
Hide Scripture in your heart before you need it. Psalm 119:11. Jesus answered every temptation in the desert with a verse He already knew. Memorise one; it will be there when the pull comes.
-
Pray about the pattern, not only the moment. Same time, same place, same tiredness? Ask God to help you change what you can, so you are not standing at the same door every night.
-
After falling, pray immediately. Do not wait until you feel worthy. Shame delayed becomes shame settled. Confess within the hour and get up.
Questions people ask
What is a good prayer for temptation?
In the moment: “Lord, I am being pulled and part of me wants to go. You were tempted too and did not fall. Give me what You had. Show me the way out, and give me the legs to take it. I choose You. Amen.” Or simply Jesus' own words: “Lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from evil.”
What does the Bible say about resisting temptation?
That it is common to everyone (1 Corinthians 10:13), that God always provides a way out (same verse), that Jesus was tempted in every way and understands (Hebrews 4:15), that Scripture is the weapon (Psalm 119:11, and Jesus' example in Matthew 4), and that submission to God and resistance to the devil go together (James 4:7). It never says temptation will vanish. It says you can endure it and there is always an exit.
Is being tempted a sin?
No. Jesus was tempted and never sinned (Hebrews 4:15). Temptation is the invitation; sin is accepting it. The moment of being pulled is not failure; it is the exact moment 1 Corinthians 10:13 is about. What you do in the next ten seconds is what matters, and praying is the right thing to do with them.
Why does God allow temptation?
Scripture distinguishes between God testing (to strengthen faith, as with Abraham) and Satan tempting (to destroy it), and says God does not tempt anyone toward evil (James 1:13). What He allows, He limits: “not beyond what you can bear.” And He uses it: James 1:12 says those who persevere under trial are blessed. Temptation resisted is how spiritual muscle is built.
How do I stop giving in to the same temptation?
Change the fight, not just the effort. Identify the pattern: the time, place, mood, and device involved. Change whatever you can (the phone out of the bedroom, a different route, a different hour). Pray every morning for the specific temptation before it arrives. Tell one person. And when the moment comes, pray short and physically move. Repeated temptations are almost always won by structure, not by willpower.
What is the difference between temptation and addiction?
Temptation is a pull you can still walk away from with effort; addiction is a pull that has taken control of the walking. Most addictions began as repeated temptations given in to. If you have prayed, tried, and truly cannot stop, see our prayer for addiction and please also reach for human help. God answers through people.
