Prayer for the fight

Prayer for motivation

A prayer for motivation asks God for the will you cannot find in yourself: “Lord, I know what needs doing and I cannot make myself begin. Breathe on me. Give me the strength to take the first step, and the purpose to take the second. Let me work as if for You, because I am. Amen.” Prayers for work, study, a flat faith and a long hard season below.

A small sailing boat with a full sail on golden water

Waiting for weather

Most of us treat motivation like weather. We wait for it. We check for it in the morning the way we check the sky, and if it is not there we decide today is not the day. Some seasons it never comes, and whole months go by with the shoes by the door.

Scripture does not treat motivation as weather. It treats it as something God supplies, to people who are already moving. He gives strength to the weary. Not to the rested. To the weary, the ones who are out of it and still asking.

The wind and the sail

The image that fits best is a sail. A sailboat does not generate its own power; it catches power from outside itself. Its job is to be in the right place with the sail up. The wind does the rest.

Praying for motivation is raising the sail. You cannot make the wind blow. You can decide to be on the water, facing the right way, with the canvas up, instead of in the harbour waiting to feel like sailing. Philippians 2:13 says God “works in you to will and to act.” The willing and the acting both come from Him. Your part is to be there when they arrive.

Start before you are ready

There is a strange grace in beginning. Almost everyone who has ever finished anything hard will tell you the same thing: the wanting came after the starting, not before. You sit down cold, you do ten minutes badly, and somewhere in the eleventh minute you notice you care again.

So pray the short prayer above and start while you are praying it. Do not finish praying first. Open the book, put on the shoes, kneel down, send the email. God meets moving people. The disciples were told to go before they understood where.

The reach

Be honest about what you do when motivation is gone. You probably reach for the phone. It promises a small reward for no effort, which is exactly what a tired will is looking for, and it delivers, a hundred times a day, until nothing slower than a screen feels worth beginning.

That reach is the moment the day turns. Pray about it directly. And if you want help catching it, PrayerMax locks the apps you reach for and opens them only after a short prayer. The reflex that used to drain your motivation becomes the moment you raise the sail instead. Over time, the thing you did when you had no will becomes the thing that gives it back.

When it lasts

Some seasons are long. The job is hard for a year. The illness does not lift. The grief sits. In those seasons, do not pray for wings. Isaiah offers three speeds: soar, run, walk. Some days walking and not fainting is the whole victory, and God counts it as one.

Pray for enough for today. Take the step. Tomorrow, pray again. At the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. The proper time is not today. But today is how you get there.

More prayers for motivation

2. Morning

Prayer for motivation in the morning

Father, I am awake and I do not want to be. The day is in front of me and I am already tired of it. You made this morning. You have something in it for me. Get me up. Give me one reason, and then another. I will go. Go with me.Amen.

3. Short prayer

Prayer for motivation at work

Lord, this work feels pointless today and I am doing the minimum. Remind me who I am really working for. Give me energy for the task and meaning in it. Let me do it heartily, not grudgingly, and let something good come of it.Amen.

4. Short prayer

Prayer for motivation to study

God, I have to learn this and everything in me wants to do anything else. Give me the will to sit down and the will to stay. Make my mind sharp and my heart willing. Let me see the purpose past the page.Amen.

5. Short prayer

Prayer for motivation when my faith has gone flat

Lord, I do not feel like praying, and I am praying anyway. The fire has gone quiet. I go through the motions and feel nothing. You have not moved. I know that. It is me that has gone cold. Warm me. Not with a feeling I have to chase, but with Yourself. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.Amen.

6. Longer prayer

A longer prayer for the will to keep going

Lord, I have run out. Not of time, or ability, or even of reasons. I have run out of *want*. I look at what is in front of me and feel nothing pulling me toward it. I used to. I remember caring. Now I scroll, and put things off, and tell myself I will start when I feel ready, and I never feel ready. Your Word says You give strength to the weary and increase the power of the weak. It says those who hope in You will run and not grow weary. I am weary, Lord, and I have not been hoping in You. I have been hoping in a feeling, waiting for motivation to arrive like weather. It is not coming. You are what is coming. So I am asking for something different. Not for the feeling. For You. Be the wind in the sail, the reason under the reason. Give me enough for the next step, and when I have taken it, enough for the one after. Let me stop waiting to want it and start doing it with You beside me. And somewhere in the doing, Lord, give the wanting back. Not because I need it to obey, but because I miss it, and because You are the God who restores.Amen.

7. Short prayer

Prayer for motivation in a long, hard season

Father, this has gone on longer than I thought I could bear, and I am still bearing it. I am not asking You to end it today, though I would not mind. I am asking for enough to keep walking. Renew my strength. Let me rise on wings, or run, or if that is too much, just walk and not faint. Walk with me.Amen.

8. From Scripture

Prayer for motivation from Scripture

You give strength to the weary and increase the power of the weak. Those who hope in You will renew their strength; they will run and not grow weary, walk and not be faint. Whatever I do, I work at it with all my heart, as working for the Lord. I will not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time I will reap a harvest if I do not give up. I can do all this through Him who gives me strength. It is God who works in me to will and to act according to His good purpose.Amen.

Scripture to pray with

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak... Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Isaiah 40:29-31

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Colossians 3:23

“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

Philippians 2:13

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Galatians 6:9

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”

Psalm 51:12

“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Nehemiah 8:10

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Philippians 4:13

How to pray a prayer for motivation

  1. Ask for the will, not the feeling. Philippians 2:13 says God works in you “to will and to act.” The will is what you actually need. The feeling may or may not follow; you can move without it.

  2. Pray for the first step only. Motivation collapses under the weight of the whole project. Pray for the strength to open the laptop, put on the shoes, kneel down. The second step is almost always easier than the first.

  3. Remember who you work for. Colossians 3:23 reframes every task. Praying “let me do this for You” gives meaning to work that feels meaningless, and meaning is where motivation actually comes from.

  4. Pray it before you scroll. Low motivation and phone-reaching are the same moment. When you notice the reach, pray instead. It is the moment the day turns one way or the other.

  5. Be honest about the flatness. If your faith feels dead, tell God that in exactly those words. The Psalms do. Honesty is not a lack of faith; it is what faith sounds like on a bad day.

  6. Do the thing while praying. Do not wait to finish praying before you begin. Pray the first line and start. God meets moving people more often than waiting ones.

Questions people ask

What is a good prayer for motivation?

“Lord, I know what needs doing and I cannot make myself begin. The wanting has gone out of me. Breathe on me; fill the sail. Give me the strength to take the first step and the purpose to take the second. Let me work as if for You, because I am. Amen.” Then take the first step while the prayer is still in your mouth.

What does the Bible say about motivation?

It locates motivation in God, not in mood. He “gives strength to the weary” (Isaiah 40:29). He “works in you to will and to act” (Philippians 2:13). Work is to be done “as for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23), which gives purpose to any task. And the harvest comes to those who “do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). Scripture never tells you to wait until you feel like it; it tells you where to get strength when you do not.

Is there a prayer for motivation and strength?

Isaiah 40:31 is the classic: “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Pray it as your own: “Renew my strength. Let me rise, or run, or if that is too much today, just walk and not faint. Walk with me.” Our prayer for strength page has more.

How do I get motivated when I feel spiritually dry?

Tell God the truth: “I do not feel like praying, and I am praying anyway.” Then pray the Psalms, which are full of people doing exactly this (Psalm 42, 51, 63). Keep the habit smaller than usual rather than dropping it. Dryness is a season, not a verdict, and almost every saint went through it. The feeling returns to those who keep showing up without it.

Why do I have no motivation to do anything?

Sometimes it is spiritual dryness, sometimes exhaustion, sometimes a phone that has trained your brain to expect a reward every few seconds so that nothing slower feels worth starting. And sometimes it is depression, which is a medical matter and deserves a doctor as well as prayer. Pray honestly, rest properly, cut the scrolling, and if the flatness has lasted weeks and colours everything, talk to someone. God answers prayers through doctors too.
