Short prayer
A short prayer for marriage
Lord, bless this marriage. Make us kind when we are tired. Faithful when it would be easier not to be. Quick to forgive. Knit us back together where we have drifted.Amen.
Marriage is a third-strand problem
A prayer for marriage is not a technique for winning the argument. It is admitting the two of you are not enough.
Ecclesiastes calls it a cord of three strands. You, them, God. Closed circles of two snap. That is not romance. That is physics. The prayers on this page put the third strand back in on a Tuesday, which is when marriages actually live.
Bless them. Confess the real sins — not the theatrical ones, the phones and the score-keeping. Ask for stubborn kindness. Ask Him to stay.
Pray for the person, not the project
It is possible to pray about your marriage in a way that is just more criticism with a holy opening. God is not joining that committee.
Thank Him for them. Ask for their good. Ask to see the actual human, not the composite of every slight. A prayer for your spouse that does that for thirty days will change the temperature of a house faster than a speech about “our issues.”
If the whole family is the ache, use prayer for family and prayer for children with this one. If the wound is something you did, prayer for forgiveness belongs in the same week.
Attention is the first faithfulness
A lot of what people call a distant marriage is two people in one room, each married to a screen. You cannot knit together what you will not look at.
Pray, then put the phones in another room for an hour. If you need the doorway enforced, PrayerMax will lock the apps until you have prayed — which is a strangely practical way of coming back to the person in front of you. Kindness needs a little quiet to land.

2. For someone else
Prayer for my spouse
Father, thank You for them. Bless the work of their hands today. Guard their mind. Give them joy I cannot manufacture. Help me to see them, not the version of them I am arguing with. Let me be a grace to them, not another weight.Amen.
3. Longer prayer
A longer prayer for marriage
God, You were at the wedding, and You have been in every ordinary Tuesday since, including the ones we treated as if we were on our own. Thank You for this person. I forget to say that. Thank You for the years, the jokes, the hard nights, the way we have already survived things we did not think we would. Forgive the sharp words, the score-keeping, the phones at the table, the ways we have made each other lonely in the same house. Wash it. We do not want to keep sleeping next to yesterday's fight. Give us a kindness that is stubborn. Give us desire that is faithful. Give us the courage to tell the truth without using it as a weapon. Where we have become roommates, make us a marriage again. Where we are hanging on, hold the rope with us. Be the third person in this house. We cannot do this well as a closed circle of two.Amen.
4. Longer prayer
Prayer for marriage in a hard season
Lord, this is a hard season and we are not at our best. Money, or sickness, or the children, or the thing we cannot say yet — it is in the bed with us. Do not let the hard thing become the only thing we are. Give us one kind hour. Give us help from outside us. Keep us from saying the sentence we cannot take back. Stay in this marriage. We are asking You to.Amen.
5. For someone else
Prayer for a distant marriage
Father, we live in the same house and we have lost each other. I cannot fix this with a speech. Soften what has gone hard. Give us a reason to turn toward each other again. Send the right help — a counsellor, a friend, a quiet evening with the phones in another room. You restore things. Restore this.Amen.
6. For your family
A prayer two people can say together
Lord, we are Yours, and we are each other's. Forgive us. Knit us. Make this house a place of peace. Help us to love as You have loved us.Amen.
7. Morning
Morning prayer for marriage
Father, before the day pulls us apart, we belong to You and to each other. Guard our words. Guard our eyes. Bring us back to the same table tonight still on the same side.Amen.
8. From Scripture
Prayer for marriage from Scripture
What God has joined together, let no one separate. Love is patient, love is kind. It keeps no record of wrongs. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.Amen.
Scripture to pray with
“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Mark 10:9
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-5
“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
Ephesians 4:2-3
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
1 Peter 4:8
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
Colossians 3:13-14
How to pray a prayer for marriage
-
Pray for them, not only about the marriage. A prayer that treats your spouse as a project will sound like one. Bless them by name.
-
Pray together when you can stand it. The four-line prayer above is short enough to say at the end of a raw day. You do not need to feel close first.
-
Confess the real thing. Phones at the table. Score-keeping. The sentence you keep almost saying. God already knows. Naming it is how it loses power.
-
Ask for outside help without shame. Counselling is not a failure of prayer. It is often an answer to it.
-
Put the phones away on purpose. Many distant marriages are not missing love so much as missing attention. A prayer for marriage that ignores the screens is missing the thief.
Questions people ask
What is a good prayer for marriage?
“Lord, bless this marriage. Make us kind when we are tired, faithful when it would be easier not to be, and quick to forgive. Knit us back together where we have drifted. Amen.” Say it for them, or say the four-line version together.
How do I pray for my husband or wife?
Thank God for them first, then ask for what today actually needs: work, a quiet mind, protection, joy. Pray to become a grace to them, not a critic with a Bible. The “prayer for my spouse” above is written for an ordinary morning.
What Bible verse is for marriage?
Mark 10:9, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, Ephesians 4:2-3, 1 Peter 4:8, and Ecclesiastes 4:12 (the cord of three strands). Read 1 Corinthians 13 slowly when you are tempted to keep score.
Can I pray for a marriage that feels over?
Yes. Ask God to stay in it, to send the right help, and to keep you from the sentence you cannot take back. A prayer for marriage in a hard season is still a real prayer. Get wise human help as well. God uses both.
Should we pray together if we are angry?
If you can say four lines without using them as a weapon, yes. If you cannot, pray separately and ask for one kind hour. God is not asking you to fake intimacy. He is asking you not to shut Him out of the fight.
