Short prayer
A short prayer for anxiety
Lord, my mind is racing and I cannot make it stop. You said to cast every anxiety on You because You care for me. So here it is. All of it. The things I can name and the things I cannot. Give me the peace that does not make sense, the kind that guards my heart when nothing else can. I am not alone in this. You are here.Amen.
Anxiety is a prayer waiting to be said
Anxiety is what happens when you carry the future alone. Every anxious thought is a rehearsal for something that has not happened, held by someone who was never meant to hold it.
That is why the Bible’s response to anxiety is not “calm down.” It is “hand it over.” Cast all your anxiety on Him. The word Peter uses means to throw, the way you throw a coat onto a chair. Not gently. Not carefully. You are meant to get rid of it.
The prayers on this page are ways of throwing.
What Scripture actually promises
It is worth reading Philippians 4:6-7 carefully, because it does not promise what people think.
It does not promise the thing you fear will not happen. It promises that if you bring the fear to God, with thanksgiving, the peace of God will guard your heart and mind. The peace comes first. The outcome may or may not change. But you will not face it undefended.
This is why the peace “transcends understanding.” It does not make sense to be calm while the diagnosis is still pending. It only makes sense if Someone larger than the diagnosis is holding you.
When anxiety and the phone feed each other
Notice the loop. You feel anxious. You reach for the phone to distract yourself. The feed delivers comparison, bad news, and other people’s curated lives. You put the phone down more anxious than before, and reach for it again.
Anxiety and the scroll are partners. Breaking the loop at the phone end is often easier than breaking it at the anxiety end. Charge the phone in another room at night. Try a week away from social media and notice what happens to your baseline. Or let PrayerMax stand in the doorway: when the anxious reach for Instagram comes, you get a prayer instead. The reach itself becomes the thing that calms you.
If it is more than anxiety
Sometimes anxiety is a season. Sometimes it is a condition. If yours is stopping you from sleeping, working, or living, please see a doctor as well as praying. God heals through medicine and counsel as surely as through prayer, and asking for help is not weakness. It is the same act of trust as the prayer: admitting you cannot carry this alone, and letting someone else take part of the weight.

2. Short prayer
Prayer for anxiety right now (a panic prayer)
Jesus. I cannot think straight. My chest is tight and I am afraid. Be here. Right now. In this room. Slow my breathing. Steady my heart. You calmed the storm with three words. Calm this one. Peace. Be still. I am Yours. You have me.Amen.
3. Longer prayer
A longer prayer for an anxious heart
Father, I come to You worn out from worrying. My mind has been running all day, rehearsing conversations that have not happened, bracing for disasters that may never come, replaying things I cannot change. I am exhausted by my own thoughts. You know every one of them. You know the fear underneath them too: that I am not enough, that I will not cope, that something is coming that I cannot survive. I am tired of pretending I have it together. Your Word says not to be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, to present my requests to You. So I am doing that. Here is what I am afraid of. Here is what I need. And here, even now, is what I am thankful for: that You have not left me, that You have carried me through every fear before this one, and that You are not surprised or overwhelmed by any of it. Give me the peace that passes understanding. Not the peace of everything being fixed, but the peace of knowing You are holding what I cannot. Guard my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus. Let me rest tonight. Let me face tomorrow one hour at a time, with You beside me in every hour. I trust You. Help me trust You more.Amen.
4. Night
Night prayer for anxiety
Lord, it is late and my mind will not switch off. The worries that hid all day have come out now that the house is quiet. You do not sleep, so I do not need to keep watch. Take the night shift. Hold everything I am afraid of until morning. Let me lie down in peace and sleep, because You alone keep me safe.Amen.
5. Morning
Morning prayer for anxiety
Father, I woke up already anxious about today. Before my feet hit the floor, I am giving it to You. The meeting, the conversation, the thing I am dreading: they are Yours. Give me only what I need for the next hour, and then the one after that. Your mercies are new this morning. So is Your peace. Let me walk in it.Amen.
6. For someone else
Prayer for someone with anxiety
Lord, You know the one I am praying for. You see the racing thoughts they cannot slow and the fear they carry quietly. Be closer to them than their anxiety is. Quiet their mind. Steady their body. Remind them they are not alone and never have been. Give them people who understand, rest that restores, and the peace You promised. And show me how to love them well through it.Amen.
7. From Scripture
Prayer for anxiety from the Psalms
When anxiety was great within me, Your consolation brought me joy. I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you. You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything.Amen.
8. Traditional
A Catholic prayer for anxiety (Saint Francis de Sales)
Do not look forward in fear to the changes in life; rather, look to them with full hope that as they arise, God, whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things. And when you cannot stand it, God will carry you in His arms. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same understanding Father who cares for you today will take care of you then and every day. He will either shield you from suffering or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.Amen.

John 14:27
How to pray a prayer for anxiety
-
Name it out loud. Anxiety thrives as a vague cloud. Say the specific fear in words: “I am afraid the test result will be bad.” Naming it to God is already half the prayer, and it shrinks the thing to its real size.
-
Breathe before you speak. Four counts in, hold, six counts out, three times. Your body is part of the prayer. Jesus calmed the storm before He taught the disciples; calm the storm in your chest first.
-
Hand it over in words. Not “help me with this” but “I am giving this to You.” Philippians 4:6 says present your requests. Actually place it in His hands, and say that you are doing so.
-
Add one thanksgiving. The same verse says “with thanksgiving.” Find one true thing to be grateful for, however small. Gratitude and anxiety cannot occupy the same breath.
-
Read the promise back to Him. Finish with Scripture: Philippians 4:7, Isaiah 41:10, or Psalm 94:19. You are not informing God; you are reminding yourself of what He said.
-
Put the phone down. The feed is anxiety's fuel: other people's lives, bad news, the endless comparison. If your hand keeps reaching for it, put a prayer in the way.
Questions people ask
What is a good prayer for anxiety?
“Lord, my mind is racing and I cannot make it stop. You said to cast every anxiety on You, so here it is. Give me the peace that does not make sense. Amen.” Short, honest, and built on 1 Peter 5:7 and Philippians 4:7. Any prayer that names the fear and hands it to God is a good prayer for anxiety.
What Bible verse is best for anxiety?
Philippians 4:6-7 is the one most Christians reach for: “Do not be anxious about anything... and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds.” Also 1 Peter 5:7, Isaiah 41:10, Matthew 6:34 and Psalm 94:19. Read one slowly, several times, until your breathing slows.
Is it a sin to have anxiety?
No. Anxiety is a human response, and Jesus Himself was “deeply distressed and troubled” in Gethsemane (Mark 14:33). The Bible's commands not to worry are invitations, not accusations: God is telling you where to put the weight, not scolding you for feeling it. Anxiety is not a failure of faith. Bringing it to God is faith.
Can prayer help with anxiety disorder?
Prayer helps, and so do doctors, therapy and medication, and using them is not a lack of faith. Research consistently finds that regular prayer and meditation lower stress markers and improve resilience. But if anxiety is disrupting your life, please talk to a doctor as well as to God. He works through both.
How do I stop anxious thoughts at night?
Get the phone out of the bedroom; screens feed the spiral. Then pray the night prayer above, slowly, and read Psalm 4:8: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” If the thoughts return, return to the verse. You are not trying to win the argument with your mind; you are handing it over.
Does scrolling make anxiety worse?
Yes, measurably. Social media use is strongly linked with anxiety, especially in the evening: comparison, bad news, and blue light all feed it. Many people find their anxiety drops sharply after a social media fast. PrayerMax puts a prayer in front of the apps that feed the spiral, so the reach for the phone becomes a moment of peace instead.
