Short prayer
A short night prayer
Lord, the day is done and I am tired. Thank You for carrying me through it. Forgive what I got wrong. Hold what I could not finish. Quiet my mind, guard my home, and give me rest. I trust You with tomorrow.Amen.
Why the last five minutes of the day matter
Most of us end the day the same way. The lights are off, the house is quiet, and the phone is glowing six inches from our face. We tell ourselves it is only for a minute. Forty minutes later we are more awake than when we lay down, our head full of other people’s lives, and God has not crossed our mind once.
A night prayer is the opposite motion. Instead of pulling the world in, you hand the day back. Instead of rehearsing tomorrow, you trust it to Someone who is already there.
It does not need to be long. The prayers on this page range from four lines to a few paragraphs. Pick one. Say it slowly. Then put the phone somewhere you cannot reach it.
What to include in a night prayer
Christians have prayed at nightfall since the beginning; the Psalms are full of it, and the Church’s evening prayer, Compline, has been said every night for fifteen centuries. Across all that tradition the same four movements keep appearing:
- Thanksgiving. Something went right today, even on a hard day. Name it.
- Confession. Something went wrong today, probably in you. Name that too, and let it go.
- Surrender. Whatever is still unresolved, you are not going to fix it from your pillow. Give it to God until morning.
- Protection. Ask Him to guard your home and the people in it while you sleep.
You do not need to hit all four every night. But if your night prayer has gone stale, one of these is probably missing.
A note on the phone
If you are reading this on your phone in bed, you already know the problem. The device that brought you this prayer is the same one that will steal the next hour.
There is no shame in that; the apps are designed by very smart people to do exactly this. But it means willpower alone will not fix it. Move the charger to the kitchen. Or, if you want the prayer to be the thing that stands between you and the feed, PrayerMax locks the apps you choose and only opens them after you have prayed.
Either way: pray, then sleep. Not pray, then scroll, then sleep.

2. Short prayer
Night prayer for peace of mind
Father, my thoughts will not sit still. They keep replaying the day and rehearsing tomorrow. You said You give Your beloved sleep, so I am asking for it. Take every worry I am holding and set it where I cannot reach it until morning. Let me lie down in peace, because You alone keep me safe.Amen.
3. Short prayer
Night prayer for protection
Lord, be a wall around this house tonight. Watch over every door and every person sleeping behind it. Keep away sickness, fear, and anything that means us harm. Send Your angels to stand guard while we cannot. We are Yours. Keep us.Amen.
4. Longer prayer
A longer evening prayer
God of the evening, You made the darkness as well as the light, and You call both of them good. As this day closes I want to stop and look at it with You. Thank You for what was good in it: the small mercies I hurried past, the people who were kind to me, the strength I did not know I had until I needed it. I am sorry for the moments I was impatient, or unkind, or too distracted to notice You. Wash them away. I do not want to carry them into tomorrow. There are things I am still holding tonight: worries about people I love, about money, about what I have not finished. I cannot fix any of them from this bed. So I am placing them in Your hands, which are bigger than mine and never grow tired. Cover this home with Your peace. Give sleep to the restless, comfort to the grieving, and safety to everyone who is out working through the night. When I wake, let my first thought be of You. Into Your hands I commit my spirit.Amen.
5. For your family
Night prayer for my family
Lord, I bring You the people under this roof and the ones who are far away tonight. Lay Your hand on each of them by name. Give the children sound sleep and happy dreams. Give the tired ones real rest. Heal the ones who are hurting, and draw home the ones who have wandered. Make our family a place where You are welcome, tonight and every night.Amen.
6. For someone else
Night prayer for someone I love
Father, You know who is on my heart tonight. Be near them as they lie down. Whatever they are carrying, carry it with them. Whatever they are afraid of, stand between them and it. Let them feel loved, and let them wake with hope.Amen.
7. For children
A child's bedtime prayer
Dear God, thank You for today. Thank You for my family and my home. Please watch over me while I sleep, and help me be kind tomorrow. I love You.Amen.
8. From Scripture
Night prayer from the Psalms
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. I lift my eyes to the hills; my help comes from You. You who watch over me will not slumber. You will keep me from all harm. You will watch over my life, my coming and going, both now and forevermore.Amen.
9. Traditional
Compline: a traditional night prayer
Visit this place, O Lord, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy. Let Your holy angels dwell with us to preserve us in peace, and let Your blessing be upon us always. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. Keep me, Lord, as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings.Amen.

How to pray a night prayer
-
Put the phone down first. Not on the pillow, not face-up on the nightstand. Across the room, or in another room. The prayer you are about to say competes with the scroll; do not make it fight fair.
-
Look back over the day with God. Where did you see Him? Where did you miss Him? Name one thing you are grateful for and one thing you are sorry for. This is the ancient practice of the examen, and it takes about a minute.
-
Hand over what you are still carrying. Say the worry out loud. Then say, in words, that you are giving it to Him until morning. Naming it is most of the work.
-
Ask for protection over your home. Over each person by name. You are not superstitious; you are asking your Father for what He says He gives.
-
End with Scripture, not a screen. Psalm 4:8 or Psalm 91 are made for this. Let those be the last words in your head tonight.
Questions people ask
What is a good short prayer to say before bed?
“Lord, thank You for today. Forgive what I got wrong. Guard my home and quiet my mind. I trust You with tomorrow. Amen.” Anything honest and brief works. God is not grading the wording; He is glad you turned toward Him before you closed your eyes.
What is the most powerful night prayer?
The most powerful night prayer is the one you actually pray, every night, with your phone out of reach. That said, many Christians hold Psalm 91 and Psalm 4:8 as the strongest bedtime Scriptures, and the Church has prayed Compline (“Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit”) for over 1,500 years.
Why is it good to pray at night?
Night is when the day catches up with you. Praying at night lets you review it with God, release worry instead of ruminating on it, and fall asleep with Scripture in your mind rather than a feed. Studies on sleep consistently show that a calm, screen-free wind-down improves sleep quality; a night prayer is that wind-down with God in it.
What Psalm should I read before bed?
Psalm 4 (“In peace I will lie down and sleep”), Psalm 91 (“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High”), Psalm 121 (“He who watches over you will not slumber”), and Psalm 23 are the classic night Psalms. Read one slowly, out loud if you can.
How do I stop scrolling in bed and pray instead?
Willpower at 11pm is at its weakest, so do not rely on it. Charge your phone outside the bedroom, or use an app like PrayerMax that locks Instagram, TikTok and YouTube and only unlocks them after you pray. Put the prayer physically between you and the scroll.
Is it okay to fall asleep while praying?
Yes. Falling asleep in the middle of a conversation with your Father is not disrespect; it is trust. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux said she often fell asleep during prayer and that God loved her no less for it, the way parents love a sleeping child.
