Short prayer
A short prayer for self-control
Lord, I keep losing control: of my tongue, my temper, my time, my appetite. I have tried to be disciplined and it lasts three days. Your Word says self-control is a fruit of Your Spirit, not of my effort. So grow it in me. Give me a pause before I react, a word before I act, and Your Spirit ruling where I have not.Amen.
You have been praying for the wrong thing
Most prayers for self-control are really prayers for stronger willpower: God, help me try harder. And God, in His kindness, mostly does not answer that prayer, because willpower was never going to be the answer. Ask anyone who has made a New Year’s resolution.
Galatians 5 says something different. Self-control is listed as a fruit of the Spirit, alongside love, joy and peace. Fruit is not manufactured; it is grown. It comes from staying attached to the vine. Which means the prayer is not “make me stronger.” It is “Spirit of God, live in me and grow this.” That is a prayer God delights to answer, because He is the one doing the work.
The half-second
Almost every failure of self-control happens in the same tiny window: the half-second between impulse and action. The sharp word is out before you decided to say it. The hand is on the phone before you chose to pick it up. The fridge is open. The reply is sent.
So pray for that half-second. Ask God for a breath in the gap. It is one of the most specific and answerable prayers you can make. A pause is where the Spirit gets a vote, and a pause is all self-control actually is.
Broken walls
Proverbs 25:28 compares a person without self-control to a city whose walls are broken through. Notice what the image implies: the problem is not that the citizens are weak. It is that there is nothing between them and whatever comes in.
So pray, and then rebuild a wall. Put the phone in another room at night. Get the snacks out of the house. Decide you will not reply to anything while angry until morning. Walls are not a failure of faith; they are what Scripture tells you to build. The Spirit grows the fruit; you tend the garden.
For most of us now, the wall most badly breached is the one around our attention. The phone is in the hand before the decision to pick it up has been made, a hundred times a day. PrayerMax is built for exactly that gap: it locks the apps you choose and opens them only after you have prayed, so that the reflex becomes the pause, and the pause becomes a prayer. It is a wall with a door in it, and the door leads to God.
Fruit takes seasons
Do not expect self-control to arrive overnight. Fruit does not. There will be weeks where the tree looks bare and you wonder if anything is growing.
Stay on the vine. Pray for today: “rule my tongue today,” “steady my temper today,” “give me my phone back today.” Count the small victories, because they are real. And be as patient with yourself as God is with you, which is more patient than you have ever been with anyone.
Better a patient person than a warrior. You are not being asked to win a war. You are being asked to grow.

2. Short prayer
Prayer for self-control over my words
Father, set a guard over my mouth. I say things in a second that take years to unsay. Slow me down. Let me hear it before I say it. Take the sarcasm, the sharpness, the need to have the last word. Let my words be few, true, and kind, or let them be silent.Amen.
3. Short prayer
Prayer for self-control over anger
Lord, I feel it rising and I do not want to go where it takes me. You are slow to anger. Make me slow too. Give me a breath between the feeling and the reaction. Let me be angry without sinning, and let the sun not go down on it. Rule my temper, because I cannot.Amen.
4. Short prayer
Prayer for self-control with food and drink
Lord, I keep reaching for it when I am not hungry. When I am bored, sad, stressed, tired, I reach. Show me what I am actually hungry for, and feed me that. Give me discipline that comes from love, not from shame. Let my body be a temple I take care of, not a way I punish myself.Amen.
5. Short prayer
Prayer for self-control with my phone
Father, my hand reaches for it before I have decided anything. Hours go. My attention is in a thousand pieces. I am never fully present anywhere. You said not to be mastered by anything, and this has mastered me. Break the reflex. Give me back my mind. Every time I reach for it today, turn my reach toward You.Amen.
6. Longer prayer
A longer prayer for discipline
God, I am a person of good intentions and short follow-through. I know what I should do. I start. I stop. I start again on Monday. I am tired of being someone whose resolutions do not survive the week. I have been treating self-control as a muscle I need to grow by trying harder, and every failure has proved I do not have what it takes. Your Word says something different. It says self-control is a fruit: something Your Spirit grows in me as I stay close to You. I have been trying to manufacture what I was meant to receive. So I am changing my prayer. Not "help me try harder" but "Spirit of God, live in me and bear this fruit." Rule my appetites. Govern my tongue. Steady my temper. Order my days. Give me the pause, the small space between impulse and action, where I can choose You. And be patient with me while it grows. Fruit takes seasons. Let me stay on the vine long enough to see it.Amen.
7. Short prayer
Prayer for self-control over my thoughts
Lord, my mind goes places I do not send it. To worry, to resentment, to fantasy, to comparison. Help me take every thought captive and make it obedient to You. Let me notice where my mind has wandered and bring it home, gently, as many times as it takes. Set my mind on things above.Amen.
8. From Scripture
Prayer for self-control from Scripture
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power, love and self-discipline. Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control. I will not be mastered by anything. I discipline my body and bring it under control, so that I will not be disqualified. Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.Amen.

2 Timothy 1:7
“Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.”
Proverbs 25:28
“'I have the right to do anything,' you say — but not everything is beneficial. 'I have the right to do anything' — but I will not be mastered by anything.”
1 Corinthians 6:12
“Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.”
Proverbs 16:32
“No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”
1 Corinthians 9:27
“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives.”
Titus 2:11-12
How to pray a prayer for self-control
-
Ask for fruit, not muscle. Galatians 5 calls self-control a fruit of the Spirit. Pray “grow this in me” rather than “help me try harder.” The difference is who does the work.
-
Name the specific area. “Self-control” in general is unprayable. “My tongue when I'm tired,” “my phone after 10pm,” “the fridge when I'm stressed.” Pray for the actual battlefield.
-
Pray for the pause. Most losses of self-control happen in the half-second between impulse and action. Ask God for a breath in that gap. It is a small, specific, answerable prayer.
-
Pray in the morning, before the tests come. You know when you tend to lose it. Pray about that hour before you reach it.
-
Build the walls. Proverbs 25:28 says a person without self-control is a city with broken walls. Pray, then rebuild a wall: the phone out of the bedroom, the snacks out of the house, the pause before the reply.
-
Pray for today only. Not “make me disciplined forever” but “rule me today.” Fruit grows daily. So does the prayer.
Questions people ask
What is a good prayer for self-control?
“Lord, I keep losing control of my tongue, my temper, my time. I have tried and it lasts three days. Your Word says self-control is a fruit of Your Spirit, not my effort, so grow it in me. Give me a pause before I react, and let Your Spirit rule where I have not. Amen.” Then name the specific area you are fighting.
What does the Bible say about self-control?
That it is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:23), a gift of the Spirit (2 Timothy 1:7), what grace teaches us (Titus 2:12), and the difference between a fortified city and a ruined one (Proverbs 25:28). It is prized above military victory (Proverbs 16:32) and modelled by Paul, who disciplined his body like an athlete (1 Corinthians 9:27). It is never described as something you generate alone.
Why is self-control a fruit of the Spirit?
Because Scripture is honest about human willpower: it fails. If self-control were purely an act of will, the strongest-willed would be the holiest, and that is not what we see. Calling it fruit means it grows from relationship, from staying close to God, the way fruit grows from staying on the vine (John 15). Your part is to remain; His part is to produce.
How do I get more self-discipline as a Christian?
Pray for it as fruit, then cooperate with the growth. Name the specific area. Pray every morning before the test. Build structures so the impulse is harder to act on (Proverbs 25:28 is about walls). Tell someone. And measure in days, not lifetimes: “I was patient today” is a real victory that adds up.
How do I have self-control with my phone?
Not by willpower; the apps are built to beat willpower. Pray the phone prayer above every morning. Then build walls: phone out of the bedroom, notifications off, social apps off the home screen. And put something in the gap between impulse and action. PrayerMax locks the apps you choose and opens them only after you pray, so the reach itself becomes the pause.
