Prayer to get closer to God

The distance is never His

Start here, because everything else depends on it: God is not far from you. He was not far when you skipped a week of prayer, or a year. He is not withholding Himself until you become more disciplined. Paul told a crowd of pagans in Athens that God “is not far from any one of us” (Acts 17:27), and he was talking to people who had never prayed to Him once.

So when God feels distant, the distance is real but it is yours. That is not a rebuke. It is good news. Distance you made is distance you can close, and He will meet you more than halfway. James puts it as a plain exchange: Come near to God and He will come near to you.

How anyone gets closer to anyone

Think about how you became close to the people you are close to. It was not one intense weekend. It was frequency. Small conversations, repeated. Being there. Telling the truth about ordinary days.

Intimacy with God works the same way, and Christians have known this for centuries. The people who seem to walk with God are almost never the ones with the most dramatic experiences. They are the ones who showed up every morning for thirty years. Two minutes daily beats two hours monthly, because closeness is a function of how often you turn toward someone, not how long you stay.

That is why the prayers on this page are short. They are meant to be prayed often.

Wanting Him is His gift

The frustrating truth is that you cannot make yourself want God more. Desire is not a lever you can pull. Everyone who has tried to “get more passionate” about their faith by effort knows how that ends.

But the Psalms show a different way. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You. That thirst is not something the psalmist worked up. It is something he was given. And the request in Psalm 51, grant me a willing spirit, means the will itself can be asked for.

So ask. “Make me want You.” It is one of the safest prayers you can pray, because it is a prayer for exactly what God wants to give.

What is crowding Him out

Be honest about where your attention goes in a day. For most of us it is a screen, and the numbers are not close: hours to the feed, minutes to God, on a good day.

That matters more than it seems. Closeness with God is built in the gaps, the quiet minute, the queue, the walk to the car. Those are the moments a phone eats first. It is not that scrolling is a sin; it is that it takes the raw material intimacy is made of and leaves nothing for Him.

Praying “make me want You more than my phone” is a start. So is putting something in the gap. If you have drifted

That is the God you are returning to. He does not need your explanation. He needs you to turn around. Say one sentence today, It’s been a while, I’m sorry, I’m here, and then say another tomorrow morning. The distance that took months to make closes faster than you think, because He is running.

The long way in

There is no shortcut to closeness with God, but there is a path, and it is not complicated. Come near, daily, briefly. Read His Word and answer it. Turn the empty moments into prayers. Remove what crowds Him out. Return quickly when you wander. Ask Him to make you want Him.

Do that for a season and you will notice, one ordinary Tuesday, that He has become the One you think of when your mind goes free. That is closeness. It was promised. Come near to God, and He will come near to you.
